Manila is the capital city of the Philippines and home to Sofitel Philippine Plaza. A cosmopolitan city rich in history, it is replete with cultural attractions such as the ancient Spanish city, Intramuros, cited as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A rock island shaped like a tadpole, Corregidor, sits at the mouth of Manila Bay – once a strategic location vital to the defense of Manila during World War II. Manila likewise throbs with urban pleasures where sophisticated dining and entertainment options are aplenty, as are high-end retail shops, many of which are found in neighboring Makati City, and at The Fort in Taguig City.
Intramuros is the oldest district of the present day city of Manila, the capital of the Republic of the Philippines. Nicknamed the "Walled City", Intramuros is the historic fortified city of Manila during the Spanish Colonial Period. Located along Manila Bay and south of the mouth of Pasig River, its thick, defensive walls were built by the Spaniards in the 16th century to protect the city from invasion. Its name in Spanish, intramuros, literally "within the walls", meaning a city enclosed by thick, high walls and surrounded by moats.
Corregidor Island is a lofty island located at the entrance of Manila Bay. Due to this location, Corregidor was fortified with several coastal artillery and ammunition magazines to defend the entrance of Manila Bay and the City of Manila from attacks by enemy warships in the event of war. Located 48 kilometres inland, Manila has been the largest city and the most important seaport in the Philippines for centuries—from the colonial rule of Spain, the United States, and Japan and after the establishment of the Republic of the Philippines in 1946. During World War II, Corregidor played an important role during the invasion and liberation of the Philippines from Japanese forces.
